Brother Exaus Gabeya Mbiati on the trumpet during a divine service
20 February 2024

On 21st January, 2024, the Osu congregation experienced a different Sunday with a number of activities that enriched their fellowship. However, there was a special testimony, to the surprise and joy of the congregation, one that only speaks to our motto for the year: Prayer Works.

The Congregational Rector, Shepherd Kwapong, served the congregation with a text word from Matthew 17: 15-16 “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into, the water. So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him.”

During the divine service, Priest Dominic Addo’s daughter was baptised.

Thereafter, the family of the departed 88 year-old Sister Victoria Akotsoo Anyetei, sought the opportunity to thank the Rector and the Osu congregation for their support and attendance of the burial of the departed sister.

However, it was the back story behind the inspired performance of a young musician during the divine service, with a trumpet no one wanted, that resonated with the Osu congregation.

Our Chief Reporter, Bishop Eric Ampadu (rtd) engaged the Rector on this interesting story: an attestation of God’s mysterious ways in answering prayer.

Shepherd Kwapong narrates: “In our bid to introduce an orchestra at Osu, certain individuals purchased some musical instruments for the learners. A trumpet was also purchased, but no one showed interest to learn how to blow it.”

The Rector continued: “However, we have a sister from Congo who has been with us for the past two years. She always shares her testimonies with us.”.

“But there is this testimony that resonated deeply with the congregation” the Rector continued. “Sister Rita returned from Congo with her son. Prior to their departure from DR Congo, the son, Exaus Gabeya Mbiati, who is a talented trumpeter in their congregation back home, requested that the trumpet he uses there be given to him to bring to Accra for use at church services. Unfortunately, the request was not approved.”

“Rita was very sad because purchasing a new trumpet in Accra was going to cost her a fortune. Nevertheless, she knew deep within her heart that her visiting son must offer his talent at Osu.”

Having listened to Sister Rita’s story, it was obvious the silent plea of Exaus and his mother had been listened to by the Heavens. Their intentions were pure and true. Unbeknown to them, a trumpet awaited Exaus at his newly adopted congregation.

Shepherd Kwapong knew there and then, why that trumpet had had no takers. It was bought as an answer to a prayer said in Congo. “I brought out the ‘abandoned’ trumpet and handed it over to Brother Exaus, to the shock and amazement of Sister Rita” he said.

The Rector concluded: “Indeed, Prayer Works!”
